My son and I are inseparable on Saturdays. This is the day we work together, play together, and if I’m half as intentional as I hope to be – this day is my best day to model my values and share my beliefs.
Today’s value to model was thrift. We needed some things from a home improvement store to tackle our projects. Being aware it was the first Saturday of the month when Home Depot gives kids free craft kits, we decided to drive the extra 10 minutes to Home Depot rather than the local Lowes. But first, I signed on to my Discover Card account where I redeemed $135 of cash back rewards for a free $150 gift card. RoundUp weed killer was on my list and just inside the door was a promotional display of RoundUp concentrate. For $24 we could get a 32 oz container along with a free hand sprayer.
So the topic of discussion became how many of these items were really free. I can hear my friends in retail screaming about the free cash back bonus, but it sure seemed to cost me nothing. The free craft kit turned out to be a Mother’s Day gift and it probably cost Home Depot less than $2 each. The craft area was packed with kids and their parents. Made me wonder how many parents spent as much as I did on their visit. Seems like genius marketing. Chalk up wins for Home Depot, Mom, my son, and me! The free sprayer concept fell apart quickly when we found 128 oz (I’m embarrassed to admit how much of this stuff I use) of the same concentrate cost $75 and the sprayer retailed at $9. A great math lesson was taught right there in the gardening aisle. While most of the lesson was lost on my student who cared more about the potential of a free treat on this excursion, it did cause me to think about the varying levels of free.
If you are a leader who feels like most days your business is running you instead of the other way around, I have a free offer that I believe falls into the “free craft” category (remember … win, win, win, and win). If you are one of the aforementioned leaders, I don’t have a sales presentation that will convince you a business framework will bring tremendous value to your business, your life, and the lives of your team members. First, I’m lousy at that type of selling. Secondly, to be in your position I know you are too much of an independent thinker and probably cynical of consultants who drop in long enough to point out your mistakes and drop a big invoice on your desk. What I can do though, is offer you a free taste of the System and Soul model. I’d love to demonstrate the value of this framework by walking you and your leadership team through a free Strategy Sprint. In 90 minutes, we can identify the most impactful things for your team’s focus and set them up to execute these initiatives with confidence and clarity. And it won’t cost you a thing!
If you are interested in hearing more or know someone who might be, please reach out. I’d love to help.
